Cephalic vein thrombosis - Color Ultrasound
Title: Color Ultrasound - Cephalic vein thrombosis
Diagnosis: Cephalic vein thrombosis
Author: Dr.ROSSET Antoine
Comment: Dr. KHAN Haleem
Chapter: Vascular System
Clinical Presentation: Patient with breast cancer. A painfulcordlike structure is
noticed on the arm. Excludethrombosis.
Comment: Compression ultrasonography remains the imagingprocedure of choice
for investigating patients with suspected deepvenous thrombosis (DVT). It is highly
sensitive and specific forthe diagnosis of proximal DVT in symptomatic patients. CDFI
andPower Doppler have further increased the accuracy of thismodality.
Description: An incompressible tubular structure is seen on the theB mode scan.
Hyperechoic inflammatory changes in the adjacenttissue are noted. The Doppler study
demonstates no central flowwithin the cephalic vein but shows slight perivenous
vascularitywhich has been described in cases of venous thrombosis. Thethrombosis is
limited to the cephalic vein and no proximal extentis shown.
