Clinical Presentation: Hepatic cirrhosis following viral hepatitis.Transjugular
portosystemic shunt. Worsening clinical condition.Assess shunt patency.
Comment: According to literature, the TIPS is patent if the peakvelocity in the
portal vein (Pvpv) > 30 cm/sec and the peakvelocity in the stent (Pvst) >100 cm/sec(for
other authors therange is: 135-200 cm/sec) Mild stenosis is present if Pvpv >20cm/sec
and Pvst>60 cm/sec Severe stenosis if Pvpv<20 cm/secand Pvst <60 cm/sec
Description: The liver is atrophic and nodular consistent withcirrhosis. The TIPS is
seen as a hyperechoic tubular structurelinking the right portal vein and the right hepatic
vein. The TIPSis patent with normal hepatopetal flow and the peak systolicvelocity is
evaluated at approximately 100 cm/sec. Note theappearance of the TIPS on the KUB film
and on CT. The angiogramdemonstrates the permeability of the TIPS.
