Internal carotid artery stenosis - Color Ultrasound
Title: Color Ultrasound - Internal carotid artery stenosis
Diagnosis: Internal carotid artery stenosis
Author: Dr.ROSSET Antoine
Comment: Dr. KHAN Haleem
Chapter: Vascular System
Clinical Presentation: 54 year old man presented with a transientepisode of right
Comment: CDFI is the modality of choice for internal carotidartery disease. Carotid
endarterectomy is being increasinglyperformed solely on the basis of carotid US.
Description: The left common carotid artery demonstrates mild wallthickening.
The left carotid bulb and the origin of the leftinternal carotid artery show a calcified plaque
with acousticshadowing. The plaque results in severe stenosis with aliasing inthe color
flow mode. There is an elevation of the peak systolicvelocity to 180 cm/sec and diastolic
velocity to 50 cm/sec; thiscorresponds to a diameter reduction of 60-80%. The external
carotidartery and common carotid artery display normalvelocities.
