Clinical Presentation: Palpable elastic mass of the jaw noticed 4months prior to
radiological evaluation.
Comment: AVMís are congenital anomalies resulting from faultydevelopment of
arterial, capillary, venous or lymphatic structuresor any combination thereof. Vascular
malformations can occuranywhere in the body and the extremities are the most
commonlyaffected sites. DSA is the principal method of evaluation, but therole of MRI and
US in evaluating venous malformation issuperseeding angiography since more clear
information regarding thelesion could be obtained by a relatively noninvasiveprocedure.
Description: US demonstrated an encapsulated echoic mass within theright
masseter muscle with central tubular structures. This lesionis compressible with the US
probe. CDFI reveals mixed arterial andvenous flow within the tubular structures. DSA and
MR confirm thehigh vascularity of the lesion which is supplied by many branchesfrom the
right external carotid artery. This mass is compatiblewith a vascular malformation.
