Clinical Presentation: Patient victim of a road traffic accident,with a flail chest on
the left.
Comment: Generally, rib fractures are not treated surgically. Inthis particular case,
osteosynthesis of the left ribs was performedbecause of a major instability of the thoracic
wall, affecting themechanics of breathing. The extent of the fractures causedherniation of
the left lung through the chest wall.
Description: Osteosynthesis of the 3rd to 7th left ribs is seen onthe chest X-ray.
The 8th to 10th left ribs are fractured withposterior downward displacement. On the right,
there is ahorizontal band of consolidation adjacent to the minorfissure.
