Clinical Presentation: Workup of a drug addict who inadvertentlyinjured the
carotid artery whilst injecting heroin in her jugularvein
Comment: CDFI is the modality of choice for internal carotidartery disease. Carotid
endarterectomy is being increasinglyperformed solely on the basis of carotid US.
Description: The Color Doppler US shows homogenous thickening ofthe wall of
the proximal right internal carotid artery withouthemodynamically significant stenosis. The
peak systolic velocity inthe internal carotid artery is 100 cm/sec and diastolic velocity of30
cm/sec; this corresponds to mild stenosis of aproximately 30-40%. MRA correlation is
obtained and confirms the mildstenosis.
