Normal carotid arteries - Color Ultrasound
Title: Color Ultrasound - Normal carotid arteries
Diagnosis: Normal carotid arteries
Author: Dr.ROSSET Antoine
Comment: Dr. KHAN Haleem
Chapter: Vascular System
Clinical Presentation: Workup of syncope.
Comment: CDFI is the modality of choice for internal carotidartery disease. Carotid
endarterectomy is being increasinglyperformed solely on the basis of carotid US.
Description: This study shows the color doppler features of normalcarotid arteries.
The normal carotid artery wall presents parallelechoes corresponding to the adventitia and
the intima, with an echovoid area that represents the media. This is best seen on the
Bmode image. The CDFI is always completed with an analysis of thespectra. The common
carotid artery and internal carotid arterydisplay low resistance waveforms compared with
the high resistancewaveforms of the external carotid artery. Features differentiatingthe
internal from the external carotid artery: the former islarger, doesnot have extracranial
branches and proceeds posteriorlytowards the mastoid process.
